New Tricks

Brooke is quickly learning new tricks. A few days ago she rolled onto her side for the first time.

This morning when I went to get her out of her crib, she had turned 90 degrees.

Portraits

After a mostly unsuccessful trip to the JCPenney Portrait Studio, Bryan and I tried to capture some good pictures of Brooke. Here are the best of the bunch:

Greats

Last weekend, Bryan and I loaded Brooke in the car and drove up to Port Townsend, WA to my grandad's house. It was a beautiful day, which meant we had great views of the newly snow-covered Olympics as we crossed the Hood Canal Bridge. Brooke got to meet her great-grandpa Proffitt and step great-grandma and great-Aunt Carolynn. But the best part of the day for Brooke was the opportunity to watch a ceiling fan. Who knew that was all it would take to get her to stop crying and start smiling?

B is for Big

Brooke is now 3 months old and lately we have been noticing just how big she is. We have a neighbor with a six week old and Brooke feels like she weighs twice as much as her. Another neighbor has a six month old girl and everyone agrees that Brooke is the same size as her. The sad part is that we have to say good-bye to many of Brooke's cutest clothes. She has grown out of all her one-piece 3 month outfits. (Thankfully, she still fits in the two piece ones.) She is wearing lots of 3-6 and 6 month outfits now.

So, for Brooke's 3 month birthday (on the 17th), I cut out one of her feedings. This didn't seem to affect her much and actually got us onto a better napping schedule of two 2-2 1/2 hour naps each day. In return, Brooke has cut out her night feeding (at least for the last two nights). Now she is down from six feedings a day to four and sleeps from 8pm to 8am. Hope we can keep this up!

Snow Day

This has been a very snowy winter in Washington. Brooke and I have enjoyed our snow days and have managed to get out and enjoy it. Brooke enjoys the fresh air and I think she is just too cute in her pink snow outfit.

Good Baby?

As many of you know, Brooke's first six weeks were less than perfect. Yes, she was a beautiful newborn baby. But as I told most people during those first six weeks: if Brooke was awake, she was crying. All of my neighbors have commented on how much they have seen me outside walking Brooke. And when I would stop to talk to any of them, Brooke would go from peaceful sleep to loud crying. And, Bryan spent many nights walking Brooke around the block in the baby Bjorn - once even in the snow.

Over the past few weeks, Brooke has changed into a happy baby who cries at more normal, predictable intervals. So, my confidence being up, I decided to take Brooke to the PX on post. Now, our last trip was not very successful: she cried the whole way over. I put her in the stroller and walked her around the parking lot for 10 minutes while she continued to cry. I finally gave up and headed home without ever setting foot in the store.

This trip was much smoother. Brooke was good in the car, slept in the carseat during most of the shopping trip, and when she woke up she just looked around (which was the case as we checked out). And the best part of the whole trip was that the cashier actually commented on what a good baby I had!

Baby Blue

Ever since Brooke was born, we have debated what color her eyes will be. At birth, they were the typical blue/gray that almost all Caucasian babies have. At her two month check-up, they really hadn't changed. Babies are supposed to get "color" in their eyes between 3 and 9 months. In Brooke's case, I think the tide is starting to turn blue (but this may just be fueled by my desire to have a child with blue eyes). What do you think?

Sleeping Beauty - Part II

A while ago, I posted an entry with a picture of Brooke sleeping just like her mommy. I thought this picture of Brooke and her daddy was a good compliment to that entry.

My daughter, the gas machine

I will try to keep this from being too crude, but you all have said you want to know all about Brooke:

Brooke is just about to hit the three month mark and the number of dirty diapers has decreased considerably. This makes both Bryan and I happy and keeps us from fighting over who has to change Brooke's diaper. (Yes, it amazes me that when she was born we would change her diaper together - pratically fighting for who was the lucky one to do it.)

In lieu of the dirty diapers, Brooke has picked up a new habit. She seems to think that when her diaper comes off or when her mommy rubs diaper rash cream on her behind, it is an invitation to pass gas. I have done lots of reading and talked to many people about raising babies, but no one warned me that the gas of a 3 month old could clear a room!

Smiles for Daddy

Grandma Sue gave us a picture frame that says "Smiles for Daddy." We finally got the perfect picture for the frame!

Bad Hair Day...Everyday

Like all parents, I think that I have the most beautiful baby in the whole world.
However, I must admit that her hair is not going to win her any awards. The bald spot has been there for about a month now. After nursing, her hair often sticks up on the sides. We joke that she looks like Ted from Scrubs.

Yes, the hair on the top always sticks up like that.

Destined to Marry a Frog Prince?

I know it is common for kids to have a favorite toy, but I didn't think their favorites were evident at 2 1/2 months of age. Brooke loves frogs. I noticed that she always smiled at one of her stuffed frogs. We have a duck made by the same company and it gets no response from Brooke. And the duck even makes noise (the frog's noise maker is broken). Luckily, we have three stuffed frogs. All of them elicit the same response - a huge smile and even some cooing!
